Hi, there!

Last week, we were honored to be the first OPTICA student chapter in the universe to invite Prof. Travis W. Sawyer, an assistant professor, an assistant professor at the University of Arizona and an ambassador of OPTICA, to our university!!

During his visit, we organized lab tours, a lunch session with us, and a seminar given by Prof. Sawyer.

A total of 22 students joined the lunch session, and 48 people attended our seminar.

In the seminar, we got a variety of attendees, from B4 students to professors, from 11 different labs. As you can see from the figure below, the majority were B4 students and M1 students.

We learned a great deal about OPTICA, the OPTICA Ambassador Program, the University of Arizona, and its research on the early detection of gastrointestinal cancer using polarization-sensitive imaging.

We were particularly surprised to learn that the University of Arizona has as many as 70 laboratories dedicated to optics, and that the facility where radio telescope mirrors are manufactured is located beneath the stadium. I believe we were only able to discover these facts because Professor Sawyer came to visit.

Thank you, Prof. Sawyer, for visiting UEC and sharing your knowledge and experiences with us!
